Background

Biotechnology industry is recognized as the world's most promising high-tech industries in the twenty-first century. The biotechnology manpower and the key technology will be much needed for the biotech companies in the future.

Southern Taiwan University established the Department of Biotechnology in response to the trend in 2002. The main purpose of the Department cultivates the development engineers, processing engineers, quality control engineers, and business professionals in the related bio-industries.

According to the above characteristics, the properties of pragmatic and mission, the Department has some differences with the general academic university

(1) A close fit with the national technology and economic trends,

(2) Both teaching and research combined with the pragmatic principle,

(3) To build a sustainable development of teaching and research environment by combining the industrial development,

(4) To create high-quality academic place of technology, human culture, industrialization, and internationalization,

(5) Continue to explore the future of mankind's knowledge and skills, and constantly open up future progress and happiness of mankind, to achieve the vision of sustainable industries.

Therefore, the Department’s goals and direction are formed by the above background and philosophy.
